Today I noticed that winter has arrived to Quebec. As I walked on my way home, I noticed the distinct aroma of the wood burning coming from my neighbors chimney. Although this is my 7th winter in Canada, I still get excited about the cold and the snow. My Nanners loves the winter! Since he is a bit short and small and all white we have to follow where his nose is in order not to lose sight of him. It is obvious that I have to take precautionary measures to ensure the safety of my dog.
Since I know I am not an animal expert and cannot base all things on just “common sense”; I took the time to find out what are the best steps to take to keep my Nanners safe. The following is a list given by the ASPCA to help us protect our fur friends:
- Anti Freeze and pets don’t mix Your pet may be inclined to lick up this sweet tasting, but toxic chemical. Check the ground for spills after you use anti freeze, and store it safely out of reach.
- Use Rodenticides Carefully Rodenticides lure mouse and rats, but they can also attract your pet. Read directions carefully and take precautions to keep your pet safe from these chemicals.
- Candy is a “no-no” Halloween candy and its wrappings can make your pet sick if ingested. Also, while jack-o-lanterns and maize are relatively non-toxic,they can still upset your pet’s tummy.
If you may think that your pet has ingested anything poisonous, it is best to call the 24hr Emergency Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435.
Also to include as a precaution it would be best to have the following sticker fixed to your door or window to let rescue workers know what pets are inside your home and how many of them. To conclude this posting I want to share the story of a heroic dog that saved his furry friend in house fire. Amazing Dog that did not need a sticker to know that the firefighters had to go save his friend.
