Even as a pup Bailey loved receiving stuffed animals. They had to have long furry noses and enough of a body so he could wrap the stuffed animal under him. 10 years later, I am still looking for stuffed animals to satisfy Bailey’s need. I started to go to garage sales and second hand stores around Montreal so I could stock up. Because now, Bailey gets tired of them very quickly..once the nose looks to worn, Bailey shoves it to the side, and let’s me know that it’s time for a new one! Did I say, Bailey is a good conversationalist!
I know it is a security issue….Bailey was born to a Mother who was found tied to a tree pregnant. Luckily, a good samaritan saw that she had been tied up for a good portion of the day and it did not look like anyone was coming back to claim her. He called the SPCA Monteregie (http://www.spcamonteregie.com) and she was taken to the no-kill shelter located on the South Shore. The story was featured in the Gazette and my heart broke. I wanted so much to givethe Mom a home and a chance to have the love and attention she so deserved. We went to visit but both agreed that it would be unfair to bring a dog into an apartment ( was living in Monkland Village at the time) because undoubtedly, she had spent the majority of her life outside. In addition, she was due anytime and would have to nurse her puppies for at least 6-8 weeks.
Shortlyafter arriving at the SPCA, she gave birth to 4 puppies..Mom and pups went immediately to a foster home In Chateauguay and that is where I first met Bailey…he stood out..the only black and white pup amongst a group of goldens, and had personality to boot. Not only did he come over to greet us, he came with a small little stuffed rabbit as if to say, “This is my baby!”
So, when it was time, Bailey and the “baby” came to stay and Bailey has had his share of “babies” since….
On a side note…
Being someone who is very GREEN, I am not into waste and do not like to go through so many stuffed animals even though they are already going through a second life by the time they get to our house…So I actually took them apart and kept the stuffing…I decided that I would use the extra stuffing to give new life to Bailey’s bed….worked out perfectly..now he has a nice fluffy bed for both he and the newest “baby” on board.
Also, I just want to mention that Gerdy( http://www.gerdysrescue.org), who was working at the SPCA at the time, was the woman who worked on Bailey’s rescue. She now runs her own small rescue and does so with the “biggest” of hearts and the desire to save and place animals in need. I keep in touch regularly with Gerdy and will always be grateful to her not only for Bailey, but for all of the dogs and cats she has placed over the years. She does it from the HEART!
