Wrapping Up Summer; How To Keep Your Pets Cool In The Heat
It’s been a hot summer and while fall is just around the corner, we’re not at the finish line just yet! Another heat wave is well on its way to wrap up summer and as Les Anges Gardiennes, we’re doing our best to make sure all pets stay as cool as possible. It’s important to us that everyone under our wings is just as safe as they are comfortable, which is why we’ve compiled this list of tips and tricks that we use to help you as pet owners to personally keep your pet cool for the remainder of summer.
- Keep those blinds closed
It’s always nice to let in a little sunlight, but closing your blinds can help to create a cool space. This is especially important if you don’t happen to have a fan or running air conditioner. Your feline furbabies can especially benefit from shutting out the heat when they’re left home alone during the day. This allows them to have several cool spaces to retreat to if it gets too hot and only takes a second to do before leaving in the morning.
- Ice cubes in the water
This is a classic; and for a good reason. It works. Putting ice cubes in your pets water not only draws out any heat from the water itself – therefore keeping it fresh and cold – but as the ice cubes melt, it continuously supplies your pet with fresh water for a short while. Take a moment to freeze a tray of water at night, and then the next morning just load up their dish! Your pets will appreciate it and it will help them to regulate their body temperature.
- Damp clothes
This is an especially great tip for your feline furbabies once again. Take a towel, or a few clothes and run them under some cold water. Make sure to squeeze out all of the excess liquid, and then lay the damp cloth in a cool area of the house where your pet is comfortable sleeping. This will provide them with a cool space to nap during the day and it only take a few moments before you leave in the morning!
- Walk in the shade
During walks, try to keep your pet in the shade as much as possible to avoid having the sun beat down on them. Dogs heat up especially fast. Just imagine having to wear a coat in a heatwave! Pay close attention to your dog’s body temperature by touching their fur to ensure they aren’t overheating. In a heatwave, it’s incredibly important to reduce the amount of time spent outside. This will prevent the heat from beating down on your pups too much and avoid burnt paws pads. Angel special tip : Decrease their exercise level and provide enough fresh water before and after any walk.
- Frozen treats (Yum)!
Of course, I’ve saved the best ( and tastiest ) tip for last. The summer heat always brings cravings for frozen delights; so why not let the pets in on it? Frozen treats will help not only to cool them down, but will also provide them with healthy stimulation during the day while your away. Get the whole family involved.
* Angel tip : Mix in their favorite toy, freeze and watch them have fun getting it!
