The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ) has sent out today a press release in which it is explained that MAPAQ is now responsible for the inspection activities relating to the safety and well being of cats and dogs that were previously performed by ANIMA-Québec . This change is the result of a decision made jointly with ANIMA-Quebec, which now wishes to focus on education and information on animal welfare.
With a team of over 200 inspectors scattered throughout the territory of Québec, MAPAQ will realize and do all inspections in areas that are not monitored by the SPA or the SPCA. The staff assures effectiveness on interventions, and in all regions. They make note to mention that they already provides inspection on the safety and well-being of large animals.
The announced change does not affect SPA ,SPCA and those that retain their mandate to carry out inspection activities.
MAPAQ is said to be concerned about the situation of animals and is working closely with its partners to ensure their safety and welfare are not compromised. In this regard, the public is invited to report any unacceptable for the health or well-being of animals by contacting the Department at 1 800 463-5023 (select option 4), or with the SPA or the SPCA Local.
