April 4 is Stray Animal Day

by Liliana Danel

According to strayanimalsday.org, on April 4 people  celebrate this day by informing about the 600,000,000 stray animals around the world. It is important for everyone to know that in Quebec we do have a huge number of stray animals. There are animal rescue groups that try to help out as much as they can with the stray cat colonies or with the overpopulation of stray dogs in their communities. But it is not enough. By informing others about the consequences for society and for the suffering of animals we can help end this problem. All these abandoned animals are innocent of society’s irresponsibility. Many will face death in pounds due to abandonment.

Just like there is irresponsible people, there are people with a good heart and a good  common sense to lend a friendly hand to these abandoned animals. It is also important to know what to do if you find a stray animal. If you may find an abandoned animal and you want to help here are some steps to follow in order to guarantee the animal’s safety and yours:

  1. Check Montreal Dog Blog’s list of Shelters and contact them in order to ensure you have a place for the animal if you are in the situation of not being able to offer the animal a home.
  2. Be sure to read the guidelines of the rescues. Some may have certain requirements for the animals that they accept.
  3. For your own safety, first make sure the animal is friendly. If the animal is not friendly it would be best to wait for a professional animal rescuer. Many animals are frightened, and possibly sick or injured animals may behave unpredictably.
  4. Be sure to have the following items: cat carrier or cardboard box. Collars and strong leashes for dogs. Bowls for food & water.
  5. In order to lure the animal try to have strong-smelling foods, such as canned tuna or dried liver.
  6. Be patient it could take some time for the animal to come to you.
  7. Before you take the animal to a shelter, take pictures and write down a description for him or her.
  8. Post the pictures and information of the animal in different websites like petluck.ca, facebook and use social media outlets in case the animal may be lost or if it could be an outside cat with a home.Contact the police department of your neighborhood and the local pound.
  9. If it is within your possibilities, take the animal to an emergency vet clinic to have a check up, plus vets have a microchip reader.
  10. Take the animal to the shelter that you have contacted and has a free space for the animal you just rescued.
